My journey in career and college advising began in 2009 as a psychology major who initiated a life-changing internship with her university's career center to follow a budding passion in the profession. Since then, I've acquired over a decade's worth of professional experience in career coaching, college admissions counseling, academic advising, collegiate teaching, and speaking at four Michigan colleges and through my entrepreneurial venture, Masters Career & College Advising, LLC. Through it all, you and your success remain at the heart of why I do what I do and love what I do!
Heather’s professional roles called her to be well-versed in advising students, graduates, and professionals in a wide variety of academic disciplines and career fields. Over the years, she narrowed her focus and developed a high level of expertise in the areas of Business, STEM, Health, Social/Behavioral Science, Higher Education, and major/career exploration.
Heather has counseled thousands of students, graduates, and professionals on how to overcome challenges and achieve their best-fit internships, entry-level positions, mid-career opportunities, and new career pursuits. In addition to her full-time roles, she has served as a Hiring Manager, Supervisor, and Program Manager. When time allows, Heather enjoys volunteering for career development initiatives at K-12 schools and community organizations.
Heather’s unique college admissions experience includes advising hundreds of high school students, transfer students, and experienced adults on 2-year and 4-year programs, transferring between colleges, and applying to graduate and professional schools. She has worked in three common higher education settings: Public 4-year, Private 4-year, and Public 2-year (Community College). Beyond Admissions, Heather has facilitated new student orientations and serves on a scholarship review committee.
Heather’s academic background is rooted in Psychology (BA) and Higher Education (MA). She is also a Licensed Personnel Agent, Certified MBTI Practitioner, and member of four professional national/state associations. Additionally, she has completed graduate credits and professional development hours in Counseling, Career Development, College Admissions, Academic Advising, and Human Resources.
Heather is a huge advocate of interning while in college. She completed two internships alongside her studies- A short-term internship in Academic Advising, and a nearly two-year internship in Career Advising. The Career Advising internship led directly into her first full-time role as Assistant Director of Career Services immediately following graduation.
As a lead Career Development Instructor focusing on Business and STEM, Professor Masters has educated classes of Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral students on how to take charge of their career development and effectively pursue jobs and further education. Outside of classroom teaching, she has also facilitated 1,100+ workshops and presentations on a wide variety of career and college topics on campuses and in the community.
As a young college student, Heather was beyond excited to job shadow at WNEM TV5 in Saginaw, MI. Her initial career goal was to become a Meteorologist and chase (research) storms in her free time. Growing up in Tornado Alley (Texas) definitely influenced her future plans, but the required, top-tier college math courses (namely Calculus III) caused her to reconsider her major. She still has a strong passion for science and considers herself a weather geek.
Heather is a proud wife and mother of two. Her husband is an Analytical Chemist and her polar opposite who shared her love of fast cars (Heather was an amateur autocrosser). They currently reside in the Great Lakes Bay Region of Michigan on their miniature blueberry ‘farm' in a house filled with Heather's growing orchid collection and their fluffy rescue kitty.

She acquired almost a decades’ worth of professional experience in career coaching, college admissions counseling, academic advising, and collegiate teaching at four Michigan colleges.
Once a former ‘lost’ college student consumed by indecision and self-doubt, Heather found her true calling in equipping and empowering others to clearly envision, confidently pursue, and strategically achieve their visions of success in college and the world of work. In 2020, her entrepreneurial spirit brought to life her own career dream of operating an independent practice to serve individuals all throughout the nation, including YOU!
